Gloucester Cathedral - Project Pilgrim
Following on from the innovative use of solar panels on the roof, the Heritage Lottery Fund supported Project Pilgrim at Gloucester Cathedral is an exemplary example of providing universal access to a major historic building of international importance.
Level access has been sensitively provided at the south entrance lobby . A welcoming new entrance foyer is an example of modern juxtaposed with old. The glazed foyer gives a feel of transparency whilst providing a bold statement to welcome those entering the cathedral.
Internally the changes in levels have been creatively made negotiable by the modern intervention of ramps and platform lifts. Here again the use of modern materials and quality design sits comfortably within this major historic setting. Full access to the ground floor for worshippers and visitors alike provides freedom and independence.
